The Woman At The Well

John 4:5-11

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

This is one of the better known stories in the Bible.

Jesus and His band of followers came to a town in Samaria near Jacob’s well.  They left Him there while they went into the town to get food. While they were gone a woman came to get water.

Do you realize that eventually----eventually we all become thirsty?

All human beings eventually become thirsty.  I use the word “eventually,” because as I write this I am not thirsty, but eventually I will become physically thirsty.  When I do become thirsty, I will get some water to quench my thirst.  That is a natural process.

We also have a spiritual thirst.  But, when we become spiritually thirsty we cannot just go and get some spiritual water to quench that thirst---that need.  In that case, we require The Water.  That Water is the Water of Life.  It is available only through Christ Jesus.

Our story is about a woman who went to a well.  But, before she got to that well, Christ Jesus was already waiting for her there.  Christianity is not man is search of God---it is God in search of man.  Christ came to seek and to save the lost.  The lost do not seek the Savior.  He finds them!

This woman did not come looking for Salvation, but she soon found that the One waiting for her at the well was the Messiah.  When the proper time comes, you too will find that the One waiting for you is the Messiah.

Each of us comes to Christ in the proper order, and at the proper time.  Long before the woman at the well saw Christ Jesus, Abraham rejoiced to see Jesus’ day (John 8:56).

One day Christ Jesus will come walking down the road searching for you.  On that day you too will see Him and rejoice.  On that day you will quench your spiritual thirst by drinking the water of life.

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
